Join Austin Justice Coalition and other advocacy groups at the first of two budget hearings to make sure Austin City Council knows that mental health reform is a need in this city and should be a funding priority.
Health problems should be met with a health response. When mental breakdowns are met with a police response, force is too often used and involuntary detention (hospital or jail) is too often the outcome. The Public Safety Commission just approved a resolution calling for funding to improve mental health first response, and Austin has already conducted most of the needed research and planning (City Audit, Meadows process.) All that’s left is the money.
