PLEASE READ UPDATE 6/13/18: Only one day left before we all will meet up on the south steps of the State Capitol building and have our voices heard loud and clear that we do not support the policies of separating families as a deterrent for requesting asylum. Please continue to spread the word and invite your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, anyone who you think needs to hear and understand what is going on in our country and being done. Please note that for some reason Facebook as a glitch in the location and it is showing Cedar Park (I have no idea why, since I'm in Pflugerville) but that the actual rally is in Austin at the capitol. Also the march portion of the original event has been cancelled please see the update below for details.
One final request. As you can imagine pulling an event together like this is not without costs. We have done our best to reduce and eliminate where possible but we could really use your help in either making a donation or sharing with others and asking them to make a donation to help support us. Can you give up your cup of coffee today and just make a small $5 donation? Every little bit helps and allows us to provide the best experience for you that we can. Thank you again for your support and we look forward to meeting you all tomorrow
Families Belong Together Austin Organizing Committee
UPDATE 6/9/18: Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest, shared or commented on this important event. We have been working with local and national organizations to raise our voices in protest against this inhumane treatment of people who are seeking refuge at our door. We learned that one of those local organizations, Grassroots Leadership, is already hosting an event at City Hall in support of the Austin City Council Vote on the Freedom City Policy and as such we are making an adjustment to our event. We are shifting to focus on the rally at the Texas State Capitol starting at 6:30 p.m. Feel free to begin gathering between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. or you can also join the event at City Hall before heading over to join us at the rally. While these are separate events they both will have tremendous impact on immigrant families in Austin and those arriving at the border.
Once again, if you are unable to join us but would still like to support, please make a donation. Every little bit helps. https://www.gofundme.com/families-belong-together-atx?teamInvite=7t7szg6E0RNxQzoUWG41Qj5aHJIkL5ZPcF6JAxIl6AHTBv04KdcqkxM8k3WTaRDz.
UPDATE 6/7/18: We are only a week away from letting our government know we will not tolerate the inhumane treatment of families who have arrived at our door asking for refuge. This is not who we are, as a country, and we will be making it loud and clear to our leaders in congress and to our president on Thursday, June 14th. You do not have our approval or support, #NotInOurName
We have some exciting announcements coming so please check back tomorrow morning for the latest information.
If you are as outraged about this as I am, please volunteer here to help us with the event http://signup.com/go/PSUGEPN.
If you are unable to join us but would still like to support us, please make a donation https://www.gofundme.com/families-belong-together-atx?teamInvite=7t7szg6E0RNxQzoUWG41Qj5aHJIkL5ZPcF6JAxIl6AHTBv04KdcqkxM8k3WTaRDz.
UPDATE 5/31/18: Things are coming together for the march on June 14th. The national and local organizers have had some amazing discussions regarding the march and especially the original name. As a result of the feedback and discussion the name for the national event has been changed to Families Belong Together to better reflect why we are having this day of protest. Each locality will be able to modify the name to reflect the issues that affect their specific community. This means our event name now becomes Families Belong Together - Austin March and Rally.
Tomorrow, June 1, the ACLU also is holding its own Families Belong Together events, so if you cannot join us on the 14th please get out and support these families in any way you can.
Every day new stories emerge of children being taken from their parents as they come to us asking for shelter and asylum. I’m not sure when it became a crime to ask for refuge but we are, in effect, criminalizing and penalizing people in desperate situations. This is not ok.
As a result of the name change we will either be updating the name of our current FB page or will create a new one with a redirect from the old page and name to the new one. We are also in the process of getting permits for the event and we will provide more details including maps and locations as we get the necessary approvals from the city. I’m hesitant to provide that now until we have approvals.
Note: we have some amazing organizers and volunteers who have stepped up and taken care of shit and I am in awe of their commitment and drive.
